Automated Windshield Molding Attachement

Sponsor: AGC Automotive Americas

Team: Precision Shield

Coach: Andy May

Students: Austin Gwynn, David Halgren, Dave McClelland, Brian Prince

The windshield of the Mercedes M-Class SUV was applied by hand with super adhesive. Team Precision Shield developed an instrument to apply this adhesive mechanically with a 0.5 mm accuracy rate. The instrument cuts down on the labor required for a single windshield, and the molding attachment will be applied more consistently without breaking the windshield glass.

The new process has anticipated annual savings of about $370,000.
