Trolley System Design (Sharps Collector)

Sponsor: BD Medical- Medical Surgical Systems

Team: COST

Coach: Dan Manning

Students: Daniel Burk, Mike Davis, Jason Foulger, Mike Mantyla

Since 2001, medical offices have used sharps collectors to dispose of needles, syringes, and other hazardous materials.

Team Cost designed a new sharps collector with an increased lifespan, a reduction of parts, and a reduced manufacturing cost. Through research and testing, the team reduced the number of parts from 134 to 88. They also doubled the life-expectancy of the collector from 50,000 cycles to 100,000 cycles.

The cost of manufacturing decreased by 8%.
