Coiled Needle Detector- AFA

Sponsor: BD Medical- Medical Surgical Systems

Team: Hawkeye

Coach: Tim McLain

Students: Moises Acevedo, Jacob Hannon, Daniel Hernandez, Benj Hillyard, Derek Lee

Hawkeye developed a coiled needle detector that can be used directly on the production line and can test multiple needle sizes. The team did many tests to determine which camera would detect the needles best. Using the Cognex Insight 5400 camera they developed software that works with the existing production line. Even though the old detector identified 98-99% of all imperfections the new one detects 100% of all coiled needles.

After 1 year, BD Medical should save up to $1 million on the new detector.
